Scenic Overlooks in South Carolina

South Carolina’s overlooks cluster in the upstate, where the Blue Ridge escarpment drops sharply toward the Piedmont near the North Carolina line. Caesars Head State Park has the best-known drive-up view in the group, a short walk from the parking area to an overlook facing the Jocassee Gorges and Table Rock. Sassafras Mountain, the state’s highest point, sits a few miles away and has a paved, accessible path from the parking lot to an observation tower right on the North Carolina border.

Both charge differently than the parking-pass systems used in some neighboring states. South Carolina state parks generally collect a per-person day-use admission rather than a flat vehicle fee, and pricing has changed more than once in recent years, so check current rates before a trip rather than going by an old receipt.

Fog and wind are the real threat to a good view here, more than season. These are exposed, high-elevation stops that catch weather the surrounding lowlands don’t get, and a clear morning at the base of the mountain is no guarantee of a clear summit an hour later. Fall brings the heaviest crowds, typically peaking in the second half of October, and small parking areas at both Caesars Head and Sassafras Mountain fill fast on peak weekends. A weekday visit, or a later morning start after any fog clears, is the more reliable bet.
