Primitive & Backcountry Camping in Arkansas

Arkansas has some of the most generous free and low-cost camping in the South, mostly thanks to the Ozark-St. Francis and Ouachita National Forests, which together cover a large share of the state’s public land. Most listings here are dispersed or primitive sites: forest road pull-offs, backcountry campgrounds, and low-fee recreation areas with a fire ring and not much else.

The Buffalo National River corridor deserves special mention. Its gravel bars allow free, first-come camping along most of the river, which makes it the single best-known free camping option in the state, especially for anyone floating or paddling a stretch of the river.

Expect thin cell coverage once you’re off the main highways, especially in the interior of either national forest. Download offline maps and fill up on gas and supplies before you leave the last town with services. Fire rules tighten fast during dry spells, so check current burn ban status before counting on a campfire. Richness scores run low across a lot of this category by design: primitive sites rarely have a posted fee, official hours, or a formal address, since that’s the nature of dispersed camping.
